ABOUT US

Why Beacon Exists

Beacon was founded because we believe it can be done differently. Too many children, families and schools are left with labels, reports and recommendations without ever feeling that the child behind them has been truly understood. We believe it is possible to combine clinical rigour with compassion:

  • To recognise strengths alongside needs.
  • To listen to children and young people, not simply assess them.
  • To support schools in building long-term capacity, not dependency.

Through assessment, consultation and partnership, we understand children and young people as people first.

Our Approach

Understanding Before Intervention

Support starts with understanding the child, learner or system before deciding what should happen next.

Participation

Listening to children and young people and involving them meaningfully in understanding themselves and shaping support.

Strengths-Based Practice

Recognising strengths alongside needs and building on what children can do, not only what they find difficult.

Capacity
Building

Creating sustainable change by strengthening the confidence and capability of families, schools and professionals.

FOUNDED BY DR ALEXANDRA SEWELL

Beacon was founded by Dr Alexandra Sewell, a HCPC Registered Educational Psychologist, university lecturer and researcher. Alexandra has worked across schools, local authorities, higher education and independent practice, supporting children and young people with a wide range of learning, developmental and emotional needs. Alongside her applied practice, she has published and taught in areas including child participation, strengths-based assessment, neurodiversity and inclusive education. The values that underpin Beacon have been shaped by both professional experience and research: a belief in understanding before intervention, listening to children and young people, recognising strengths alongside needs, and supporting schools to build long-term capacity.

Today, Alexandra continues to combine practice, teaching and research through her work with families, schools and professionals.

Why the Name Beacon?

A beacon provides guidance in uncertainty, helping people navigate difficult journeys and find direction. At Beacon, we believe psychology should do the same: bringing greater understanding, clarity and confidence to children, families, schools and professionals.
