SPECIALIST TEACHER ASSESSMENT
Parents pay for a one-off assessment by a specialist teacher to determine whether their child meets criteria for dyslexia, dyscalculia or dysgraphia. This can provide valuable diagnostic clarity, but often focuses primarily on identification rather than developing a broader psychological understanding of the learner.

A psychologist-informed assessment pathway that combines diagnostic clarity with a deeper understanding of your child as a learner. Assessment information is brought together through Educational Psychologist oversight and formulation, helping families understand strengths, barriers to learning, and effective support strategies.

Assessment should do more than identify whether a specific learning difficulty is present. Through Educational Psychologist oversight and formulation, we seek to understand not only what difficulties exist, but also their emotional impact on the child, how they view themselves as a learner, and how these factors interact to shape their learning journey.
- Additional screening for commonly associated emotional barriers to learning, such as maths anxiety in dyscalculia, reading-related anxiety in dyslexia, and avoidance of writing or fine motor tasks in dysgraphia
- Assessment of learner self-efficacy, confidence and self-beliefs, exploring how your child views themselves as a learner and approaches challenge
- A personalised psychological formulation that brings together learning difficulties, strengths, emotional experiences and learner beliefs
- An additional child-friendly report, adapted to the child’s age and communication profile, helping them understand the outcomes of assessment
- Ongoing service development informed by child and family feedback

Children and young people are experts in their own learning experiences. Informed by Dr Sewell’s research into co-production, participation and strengths-based assessment, we believe assessment should be something that is done with learners, not simply to them.

Assessment Process
Free Exploratory Call
An opportunity to discuss your concerns, ask questions and decide whether Beacon is the right fit for your child and family.
Information Gathering
Completion of questionnaires and collection of background information from parents, schools and other relevant professionals to build an understanding of your child’s learning experiences.
Assessment
A tailored assessment of cognition, attainment and related factors relevant to your child’s presenting needs. Depending on the referral question, this may include assessment of literacy, mathematics, written expression, working memory, processing speed and other areas of learning.
Listening to Learners
An opportunity for children and young people to share their own experiences of learning, strengths, challenges and aspirations. Where appropriate, additional assessment of factors such as learner confidence, self-efficacy and learning-related anxiety may also be completed.
Educational Psychological Formulation
Assessment information is brought together through Educational Psychologist oversight and formulation to develop a deeper understanding of your child’s unique learning profile, including strengths, barriers to learning and support needs.
Feedback Meeting
A feedback session with the child (where appropriate) and family to discuss findings, recommendations and next steps.
Reports
You will receive a comprehensive assessment report, alongside additional strengths-based and child-friendly resources included within your assessment package.

Fees
We offer comprehensive Specific Learning Difficulty assessments for a fixed fee of £1,000.
This includes information gathering from parents and school, cognitive and attainment assessment, Educational Psychologist oversight and formulation, a feedback meeting, comprehensive written report, strengths-based learner profile, child-friendly report, personalised recommendations for home and school, and advocacy guidance for families.
